The Blackmagic Design Video Assist 7" 3G is a 7-inch monitor features 3G-SDI and HDMI connections. It includes two SD card recorders, ideal for ProRes recording, and a 7-inch LCD with zebra, focus peaking, and false colour. Users also benefit from WFM, histogram, vector, 3D LUTs, and RGB parade scopes. The device supports video formats up to 1080p60, and its files are compatible with all operating systems and popular video editing software like DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Final Cut Pro X.
Traditional cameras, designed for shoulder mounts, can be uncomfortable for long tripod shoots. Video Assist improves your setup with a rigged on-board screen, offering better comfort and situational awareness for the operator, assistant, or director. The 7" Monitor it provides features like focus zoom, peaking, zebras, histogram, false colour, scopes, frame markers, guides, and a touchscreen.
Video Assist makes framing and focusing easy. The display shows key information like timecode, transport controls, audio meters, and a histogram. You can customize the LCD to show overlays like filename, focus peaking, zebra, false color, frame guides, and 3D LUTs. 3D LUT support lets you monitor shots with your desired look and "bake in" the LUT when recording. For Blackmagic RAW, the LUT is added to metadata, allowing it to be disabled in post-production.
Video Assist uses standard SD cards, which are widely available and affordable. These cards, including faster UHS-II models, offer small file sizes, enabling long recordings suitable for broadcast.
Blackmagic Video Assist is the perfect upgrade for cameras, offering a larger, brighter display than typical consumer screens, along with professional focus assist and higher-quality file formats. It's also ideal for upgrading older broadcast cameras to modern formats compatible with top editing software, supporting Apple ProRes, Avid DNx, and Blackmagic RAW. With HDMI and SDI inputs, it works with consumer, broadcast, and DSLR cameras.
Video Assist records in standard open file formats, eliminating the need for transcoding. Its files are compatible with all post-production software, including DaVinci Resolve Studio. It supports industry-standard 10-bit ProRes or DNx files from any HDMI or SDI camera.
Video Assist offers built-in scopes for precise exposure and broadcast compliance, making it a great portable waveform monitor. It features a waveform display for luminance levels, a vectorscope for colour intensity at 100% SDI reference, an RGB parade for colour correction, and a histogram for white-to-black detail and clipping. These scopes can be overlaid on live video or shown as a small picture-in-picture.
Cameras that output logarithmic color space preserve dynamic range but can appear flat on a monitor. 3D LUTs solve this by applying a "look" to the monitor, giving you a preview of the final image. LUTs can be used for monitoring or burned into files during Blackmagic RAW capture. Video Assist supports 17 and 33-point 3D LUTs, along with built-in options like Extended Video and Film to Video.
The digital slate and metadata features make it quick to add metadata to shots. Swipe the screen to access the slate, and automatically increment take numbers with each recording. Reel numbers can also be set to increment when formatting a card. All metadata is saved with the files for easy access in post-production software like DaVinci Resolve.
Blackmagic Video Assist includes a high-quality built-in audio recorder, surpassing most camera audio. In SDI formats, it records 2, 4, 8, or 16 audio channels. The 7" models feature 2 XLR inputs with phantom power and 192 kHz audio at 16 or 24-bit depth. Audio meters can switch between VU or PPM ballistics.
Video Assist supports multiple languages, including English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, German, French, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, and Turkish. Upon startup, you can select a language, and switch languages anytime from the menu. The on-screen text and video overlays will update accordingly, making it ideal for international work with different crews.
Blackmagic Video Assist files are compatible with all operating systems and most video software. Media can be formatted in ExFAT or HFS+, making it easy to access on computers like regular disks. DaVinci Resolve is ideal for Video Assist, offering editing, colour correction, audio, and visual effects, and is available for free on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Recorded files are also compatible with other software like Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X. With Video Assist, your media remains accessible for future use.
