The Blackmagic Design Video Assist 5" 3G is a 5-inch LCD monitor with 3G-SDI and HDMI connections. It features a built-in SD card recorder for ProRes recording, along with tools like zebra, focus peaking, false colour, waveform, histogram, vector scope, 3D LUTs, and RGB parade scopes. Supporting video formats up to 1080p60, files from the Video Assist are compatible with all major operating systems and popular editing software such as DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Final Cut Pro X.
Traditional cameras, designed for shoulder use, can be uncomfortable for long shoots. Video Assist improves comfort with an on-board rigged screen, offering better situational awareness for the operator, assistant, or director. The Video Assist 5" 3G gains additional features like focus zoom, peaking, zebras, histogram, false colour, scopes, frame markers, and a touch screen.
With a bright 5" touchscreen, Video Assist makes framing and focusing easy. The touchscreen shows vital info like timecode, transport controls, audio meters, and a histogram. You can customize overlays, including filename, focus peaking, zebra, false colour, frame guides, and 3D LUTs. 3D LUT support lets you monitor shots with the desired look, and if using Blackmagic RAW, the LUT is stored in the metadata and can be disabled in post.
Video Assist uses widely available SD cards, allowing long recordings on standard or faster UHS-II cards. These high-speed, affordable cards are ideal for broadcast use.
Blackmagic Video Assist is a perfect upgrade for cameras, offering a larger, brighter display and professional focus assist features. It also enhances older broadcast cameras with modern file formats like Apple ProRes, Avid DNx, and Blackmagic RAW. With HDMI and SDI inputs, it connects to any consumer, broadcast, or DSLR camera.
Video Assist records in standard open file formats, eliminating the need for transcoding. Compatible with all post-production software, including DaVinci Resolve Studio, it records in 10-bit ProRes or DNx, supporting all HDMI and SDI cameras.
Video Assist includes scopes for precise exposure and broadcast compliance, making it an ideal portable waveform monitoring tool. The waveform display shows luminance levels, while the vectorscope measures colour intensity at 100% SDI reference levels. The RGB parade is perfect for colour correction, and the histogram reveals white-to-black detail and clipping in highlights or shadows. Built-in scopes can be overlaid on live video or shown as a small picture-in-picture in the top right corner.
Some cameras output logarithmic colour space to preserve dynamic range for post-production, but this can make the footage appear flat on a monitor. 3D LUTs address this by applying a "look" to the monitor, giving a preview of the final image during editing. Video Assist supports industry-standard 17 and 33 point 3D LUTs, or you can use built-in LUTs like Extended Video and Film to Video.
The digital slate and metadata features allow quick shot labelling. Swipe left or right on the screen to access the slate, with automatic take numbering and reel number increments when formatting a card. All metadata is saved with the files and accessible in post-production with software like DaVinci Resolve.
Blackmagic Video Assist features a built-in professional audio recorder, offering superior quality compared to most cameras and eliminating the need for extra audio gear. It supports recording 2, 4, 8, or 16 channels of audio in SDI formats.
Blackmagic Video Assist supports multiple languages, including English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, German, French, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, and Turkish. Upon startup, you can select your language, and switch languages at any time through the menus. The on-screen text and video output overlays will update to the chosen language, making it ideal for international shoots with diverse crews.
Blackmagic Video Assist uses common file formats compatible with all operating systems and most video software. Media can be formatted in ExFAT or HFS+ for easy access on computers. DaVinci Resolve, perfect for use with Video Assist, offers editing, color correction, audio, and visual effects, and is available for free on Mac, Windows, and Linux. You can also use recorded files in software like Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X. Video Assist ensures your files remain accessible in the future.
